Volcano's 1850s houses hold some of the oldest plank floors in Amador County, and Barron's is 20 minutes away in Sutter Creek. We refinish original wood where it can be saved, lace new engineered hardwood into old floors, and lay vinyl plank, tile or carpet where the original is gone.

Two ways in from the showroom: Ridge Road east to Pine Grove and Pine Grove-Volcano Road north into town, or Sutter Creek-Volcano Road, which becomes Shake Ridge Road. Both are about 12 miles of winding two-lane road.
The town is a cluster of 1850s stone and brick buildings around the St. George Hotel and the Cobblestone Theatre, with homes on acreage spread along Shake Ridge Road, Pine Grove-Volcano Road and Rams Horn Grade. A historic floor needs a different kind of care than a tract floor: level what has tilted, save what is sound, and choose a product that tolerates framing that is not square. The cabins and 1970s to 1990s homes outside town take a straightforward install of Quick-Step laminate, COREtec plank or Johnson hardwood.

Homes in Volcano
The houses inside the old town date from the 1850s through the early 1900s and were floored with whatever the mills were cutting: wide fir and pine planks laid straight over joists, sometimes with no subfloor at all. A century and a half later the joists have settled, boards have cupped, and later owners have layered linoleum, particleboard and carpet on top. Beneath all of that there is often a floor worth uncovering, and we assess it board by board before recommending anything.
Outside town, along Shake Ridge Road and toward Pine Grove, the housing is cabins and 1970s through 1990s homes on wooded acreage. These share the upcountry realities of wood stoves, dust and pier-and-post foundations, but they are simpler to floor: a plywood subfloor, a few transitions and a straightforward install once the old carpet is out.
Old Volcano kitchens and bathrooms are small, rarely have a straight wall and were often finished with whatever was cheap at the time. Made-to-order cabinets, a digitally templated counter and a properly waterproofed shower fit those rooms in a way stock materials cannot, and the work can be done one room per phase.

In Volcano carpet belongs in the upstairs bedrooms of the old houses, where it quiets a plank floor and warms a room that was never insulated. A bound area rug cut from the same roll is often the better choice for a front room, because it keeps the original wood visible.
